Business Development Manager – Civil market France

Job Introduction

Framed by its current expansion into the French territory, ALE has decided to appoint a business development role focused on the Civil market. Initially, the role will focus on developing ALE’s strategy for the sector.  Once agreed, you will be responsible for executing this strategy, by acting as the key conduit between our businesses and the key influencers in the sector.

The role of the business development manager is to research potential opportunities to engage and support local businesses, as they bid for and potentially win contracts locally and internationally.  This support will most likely take the form of working with the ALE and client engineering team to design and create solutions to the unique challenges faced, then develop a network of key relationships through which ALE will receive requests for proposals or quotations.

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have a technical experience or background, which you will have used as a platform to build a career in sales or business development.  You will have experience in how clients in the civil sector tender for and secure projects, and ideally will have an understanding of the heavy lifting and transport engineering business that we specialize in.  Because of your prior experience in business development you will know the key influencers, and have a clear picture of how to introduce ALE’s solutions to these new marketplaces as well as how to facilitate ALE’s early engagement in the development cycle of projects.

You will spearhead ALE’s drive into this new and exciting market – to be successful you will rely on your industry experience, your ability to share and engage other stakeholders with a compelling vision, and your inner drive and conviction to take this from an idea to a thriving new team with an order book and a market presence. 

You will be confident, multilingual, highly credible at executive level, happy to work alone and capable of both developing a realistic business development plan, and then executing it successfully.

Role Responsibility

  • Develop the presence of the ALE business into the French civil market that would require the support of ALE’s heavy lifting and transport engineering solutions in this industry sector, and how ALE could position itself as a value added service provider within each.
  • Build a portfolio of contacts
  • Engage with contacts and share ALE’s value proposition.
  • Work with engineering teams to create innovative solutions to client problems.
  • Engage with potential clients to enable early involvement in project work.
  • Prepare bids / tender documentation.
  • Track activities using Microsoft Dynamics Client Relationship Management (CRM) software.

The Ideal Candidate



  • Good commercial acumen
  • Intermediate Excel / Word / PowerPoint / Outlook


  • Degree or equivalent in a related Engineering discipline



  • Knowledge about civil market and main stakeholders in France


  • Knowledge about heavy lifting / transport engineering and its part in major projects



  • Significant commercial activity in (complex) civil projects. 


  • Commercial / Business development experience in heavy lift / transport market – established industry contact networks, presenting up to executive board level, leading bids, securing contracts with individual values up to and above €1m



  • Native in French language
  • Fluent English – written and spoken
  • Skilled networker

  • Capable of forming a 12-month business plan
