Commercial Contracts Manager - UK & Renewables

Job Introduction

You will play an important role in our UK and wind energy businesses when it comes to providing advice, proactive guidance and support on commercial, contractual, legal and insurance matters.

You will report in to the ALE Group Head of Legal on pre, post contract and insurance matters. You will take your commercial lead from the local business. 

You will assist our project managers by providing legal, contractual, commercial and insurance support during the project execution phase.

You will have sound experience and skills in the planning of projects using software such as Primavera. You will be required to control the reporting of progress (of multiple global projects) against baseline and ensure contractual notices are submitted. You will be key to retaining contractual entitlement.

You will have a powerful mix of relevant sector experience (Transport, Construction and Installation of wind turbine components), a deep understanding of the commercial function, and sound legal skills.

Role Responsibility

Core role

  • Support the commercial teams, in tenders and negotiation of contracts, optimising price and quality against risk
  • Planning and reporting of progress against baseline and ensuring ALE's contractual entitlement is retained.
  • Support and guide the commercial and project management teams in the region by providing legal, contractual and commercial support to ensure we minimise costs and maximise value
  • Be the first point of contact for all insurance matters with support from Group Legal.
  • Directly support financial and commercial negotiations where required.
  • Report material contractual and or legal risk in to Group Head of Legal on a regular basis.

Responsibilities

  • Negotiate contract terms, pricing and payment schedule, ensuring that the agreements with the customers are commercially advantageous to ALE.
  • Ensure the ALE contracts system is up to date with key contract information, ensuring regional and group visibility on various aspects of contracts
  • Intervene in, analyse, manage and resolve business conflicts to minimise disputes with clients / sub-contractors.
  • Establish and maintain long-term working relationships or partnerships between the company and clients.
  • Establish the key objectives to be achieved during contract negotiations.
  • Establish good working relationships with our Insurance brokers.
  • Control the planning and reporting of global renewable contracts and advise the project teams where contractual notifications are required.
  • Remaining engaged with key Stakeholders to ensure optimisation of contract opportunities. Including: extension of time, variation opportunities, claims for loss and expense etc to maximise ALE's commercial entitlement.
  • To participate as a member of the management team playing an active role in the development of the business.
  • To provide advice and support to other business units (not your core units) where required.

The Ideal Candidate

QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE

ESSENTIAL

  • Legal (contract law), contracting, or Insruance qualification

DESIRABLE

  • Educated to degree level, relevant degree (legal, QS, management or finance)

EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL

  • At least five years’ experience in dealing with corporate contracting matters
  • Client facing experience
  • Experience in successfully negotiating commercial aspects of contracts
  • Previous experience in the wind renewables sector
  • Previous experience working for a Subcontractor.
  • Good understanding contracting, principles and practices
  • Good understanding contract law / construction law.
  • Good understanding Insurance principles and practices.

DESIRABLE

  • A period of 3 years or more working as a contracts manager in a relevant sector. 
  • Experience of developing and writing strategies, policies and plans, claims/complaint handling, financial management and budgetary control,
  • Understanding of Court processes and procedures
  • Prior use of systems for used for managing and controlling contractual risk.
  • Some experience of working internationally
  • Involved in working with / for EPCs
  • Previous experience as a Quantity Surveyor

  • High quality written and spoken English
  • Able to balance risks and provide clear and timely advice.
  • Ability to see the commercial opportunities in any contract.
