Commercial Contracts Manager

Job Introduction

You will play an important role in our USA business when it comes to providing advice, proactive guidance and support on commercial, contractual, legal and insurance matters.

You will report to the ALE Group Head of Legal on pre, post and insurance contractual matters, where required. You will take your commercial lead from the local business. 

Thereafter you will assist our project managers by providing legal, contractual, commercial and insurance support during the project execution phase.

You will have a powerful mix of relevant sector experience, a deep understanding of the commercial function, and sound legal skills.  This will enable you to not only recognise the key issues in a contract, but also to give a balanced view of the risks against the reward.

Role Responsibility

Core role

  • Support the commercial teams in tender preparation and negotiation of contracts, optimising price and quality against risk
  • Support and guide the commercial and project management teams in the region by providing legal, contractual and commercial support to ensure we minimise costs and maximise value
  • Be the first point of contact for all insurance matters with support from Group Legal.
  • Directly support financial and contractual negotiations where required.
  • Report material contractual and or legal risk in to Group Head of Legal on a regular basis.


  • Negotiate contract terms, pricing and payment schedule, ensuring that the agreements with the customers are commercially advantageous to ALE.
  • Ensure the ALE contracts system is up to date with key contract information, ensuring regional and group visibility on various aspects of contracts.
  • Intervene in, analyse, manage and resolve business conflicts to minimise disputes with clients / sub-contractors.
  • Establish and maintain long-term working relationships or partnerships between the company and clients.
  • Establish the key objectives to be achieved during contract negotiations.
  • Establish good working relationships with our Insurance brokers
  • To participate as a member of the management team playing an active role in the development of the business.
  • To provide advice and support to other business units (not your core units) where required.

The Ideal Candidate



  • Legal (contract law), contracting or Insurance qualification


  • Relevant degree (legal, QS, management or finance)



  • At least five years’ experience in dealing with corporate contracting matters
  • Previous experience working for a subcontractor.
  • Good understanding of USA contracting, principles and practices
  • Good understanding of USA contract law / construction law.
  • Good understanding of USA Insurance principles and practices.


  • A period of 3 years’ or more working as a contracts manager in a relevant sector. 
  • Experience of developing and writing strategies, policies and plans, claims/complaint handling, financial management and budgetary control,
  • Understanding of court processes and procedures
  • Prior use of systems for used for managing and controlling contractual risk.
  • Some experience of working internationally
  • Involved in working with / for EPCs
  • Previous experience as a quantity surveyor
