Project Cost Controller/ Cost Engineer

Job Introduction

ALE is seeking a Project Cost Controller for one of our wind farm projects near Ballarat, Victoria. This is an exciting project role that is best suited to an experienced cost controller with a finance or engineering background.

As an ALE Cost Controller, you will be responsible for the control and monitoring of project expenditure. The role is integral to the successful delivery of the project and will see you interact with the various departments including the project managers, operations, commercial and finance to assist with cost control tasks including project forecasting and cost analysis. The role will see you become a key member of the project team. with the potential to develop into other areas of the business in the future.

Role Responsibility

  • Control and monitor project total expenditure including verifying and checking of invoices and claims from suppliers and subcontractors to ensure that all project expenditure is captured and properly recorded.
  • Provide planning and cost controlling support for all projects including variation reporting, monitoring of milestone progress to the preparation of customer billing processes etc.
  • Perform and manage project activity scheduling and monitoring
  • Perform commercial review of subcontractor’s quotations for the preparation of Service Agreements.
  • Coordinate and work with the project management team to resolve project issues to ensure the delivery/completion of the project work
  • Monitoring project costs and working on efficiencies whilst maintaining company standards
  • Attend project meetings and discussions with the Project Management Team (PMT) and external clients
  • Tracking of contractual sales variations and identifying opportunities to maximize billings
  • Perform project costing related reporting to the team and management’s review on a monthly basis to ensure that expenditures are kept within the project budget
  • To work effectively and efficiently with minimum supervision using stronganalytical and problem solving skills
  • Preparation and monitoring of project budget with Project Manager.
  • Utilisation of IFS Purchase Order system
  • Compilation of project information for stake holders
  • Tracking of project performance against budget and analysis of variance
  • Preparation of sales invoice requests to accounting & finance manager with supporting documentation, including tracking of rechargeable costs
  • Monthly project review with project manager, accounting & finance manager, regional financial controller, and general manager, to determine sales and purchase accruals
  • Subcontractor management including verifying and checking of invoices and claims for suppliers, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure all project expenditures are captured and properly recorded
  • Review of project hours from timesheets, including overtime and work schedule
  • Ensure project budget key points are understood by the project team and operations contribution and general development of internal cost control procedures.
  • Contribution and general development of the company cost reporting templates to reduce inefficiencies and to ensure the report structure is as efficient as possible.

The Ideal Candidate


  • Degree level qualification preferably in relevant field


  • Experience in a similar field / numerate disciplines
  • Experience of project orientated cost control.


  • Proficiency in Excel / Word / Outlook.
  • Excellent English both written and oral.


  • Experience with an ERP software is considered an asset.


  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills and meticulous.
  • Good communication skills, proactive, good initiative and ability to work under pressure.
  • Independent worker being able to work with minimal supervision.
  • High level of self-motivation.
  • Able to learn new techniques and procedures.
  • Quality and detail focus.
  • Organized.
