Project Manager

Job Introduction

As an ALE Project Manager you will be responsible for the planning and management of projects in line with customer requirements and ALE company policies, procedures and business ethics codes whilst striving to deliver excellent customer service. Your people skills will be second to none as you will be communicating with all levels of staff and the client, you will also need to attend and manage both internal and external meetings. You role will be key in promoting ALE's image of providing a professional and safety conscious working environment. No two projects are the same, and project sites will be at a number of destinations both within and outside of the UK

Role Responsibility

  • Plan, co-ordinate and implement the project management activities on a project in order to meet the contract commitments and objectives.
  • Attend customer meetings to review issues associated with the delivery of a project. These may include (although not limited to) technical, commercial, programming and HSQE issues.
  • To ensure that all project programmes are inputted to online project global management system and communicated on-time and of sufficient quality.
  • To ensure that all project HSQE documentation is completed on-time and of sufficient quality to project requirements.
  • To ensure that all routing surveys and permitting requirements are completed on-time and are of sufficient quality to project requirements.
  • To control project budgets to deliver profitability.
  • To ensure all activities meet with the standards for quality management, health and safety, environmental policies and local laws to which the business find itself operating under.
  • Co-ordinate with the internal departments to ensure our activities are compliant with our agreed scope/contract and communication of change is made in a timely and suitable manner
  • Co-operate with the Sales Manager to identify areas of additional revenue within a project and new sales opportunities.
  • Maintain historical and develop new client relationships to delivery high levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Demonstrate ability to interact and co-operate with all company employees and contractors.

To effectively perform in the role of Project Manager, it is essential to build a knowledge of the following range of equipment and their application over a period of time through formal training sessions using the in-house ALE Engineering Guidelines and exposure to live projects to see the equipment in use. This will be planned during the initial induction phase after joining.  
ALE equipment, including: 

  • Conventional trailers
  • Girder Frame Trailers
  • Self Propelled Trailers (SPTs)
  • Self Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs)
  • Four-Point Hydraulic Lifting Systems (‘Lift N Lock’)
  • Gantry Lifting Systems, including Strand Jacks
  • Jacking and Skidding Systems
  • Cranes 

Other industry equipment that ALE regularly sub-contract or interact with include: 

  • Cranes (mobile hydraulic, crawler, pedestal etc)
  • Barges
  • Ocean-going heavy-lift vessels  

HSQE is a major part of everyone’s role within ALE and the Project Manager will undergo formal internal and external training in the following areas to gain the necessary knowledge to manage themselves and others safely in the workplace: 

  • ALE SAFER training
  • Synergi Life training
  • CCNSG Safety Passport
  • National Grid Basic Electrical Safety Competencies (BESC)
  • British Safety Council Risk Assessment Level 2
  • Institute of Occupational Safety and Health Managing Safely 

The Project Manager may attend other courses as required on specific projects and during their personal development. 


The Ideal Candidate


  • HND or equivalent in a technical discipline


  • IOSH Working Safely
  • CCNSG Safety Passport
  • National Grid
  • BESC
  • Risk Assessment Training
  • CPCS Appointed Person


  • At least 1 year experience in transport, shipping or lifting markets with evidence of delivering targets and achieving objectives


  • Proven experience of acting as a project manager with a direct customer interface
  • Proven experience of developing sales opportunities with existing customers


  • Project management


  • Intermediate Excel / Word / Powerpoint / Outlook
  • Some knowledge of planning software
  • Clear understanding or the relevant equipment and its use


  • High level of self motivation and self management
  • Good communicator – Written and verbal
  • Must be able to work as part of a team
  • Able to learn new techniques and procedures
  • Able to invent and propose new methods of work / modifications to existing systems

  • To be based at either Hixon, ,Staffordshire (ST18 0PE) OR in Middlesbrough (TS3 8BS) and be willing to travel to Staffordshire on a weekly basis with some overnight stays.
